In this blog, I’m featuring one of my current students, Blake Teitel. Blake loves music! He has been playing piano for 10 years. In addition, he has been playing saxophone for the past 3 years, and drums for the past 5 years. He also plays a little guitar. Blake plays in his school’s band, jazz band, and wind ensemble. For the past 2 years, he has been a student at Westminster Choir College prep school, where he studies theory, jazz theory, and music history.

Blake likes many different types of music, including: jazz, classical, rock, and other “cool music”. He is also very fond of writing his own music.

Playing at local coffee houses and inns is something Blake enjoys doing with his brother and friends. Often, they play to raise money for local charities or community organizations.

Blake has other interests outside of music, including: being with his family, long boarding, water sports, and going to concerts and movies.

Blake would like to thank his family for supporting him and his musical studies.

Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli was an Italian pianist and teacher (1920-1995). He played a good bit of the standard classical repertoire, and had his own unique interpretations. He has been an inspiration to me, as I admire those interpretations, and the depth and lengths he went to in order to achieve those interpretations. Some of his work is just stunningly moving to me. If you’re interested in discovering a wonderful classical pianist you may not be familiar with, I highly recommend you listen to some Michelangeli.

June Leslie Wieder, DC, has done some very interesting research. Her training and practice is in chiropractic. In addition, she is a graduate of the Swedish Institute of Massage, and a Trager practitioner. Her research has focused on resonant frequencies of the vertebrae. Her research shows something very intriguing: that each vertebra of the spine has a specific resonant frequency. Furthermore, these frequencies match the 12 tones of the western musical scale from the C below middle C on the piano, to middle C. You can read about her research and the results in her book: Song of the Spine. And here’s a link to an article she wrote about the same subject: June Wieder article.

If you’re interested in using sound for healing/balancing/well being, I highly recommend taking a look at June’s research.

(I’ve done some very rudimentary experimentation along these lines with people and animals, and got some very interesting results! I’ve also done experiments with tuning forks elsewhere on the body: one example is on the feet. There are so many nerve endings there, as well as “energy lines” or meridians, that it’s a great place to feel the physical effects of tuning forks.)

This Christian organization’s focus is helping children in need throughout the world primarily through child

sponsorship. I have personally visited their headquarters in Colorado, and was very impressed.

Here’s a little about them in a nutshell (directly from their website):

Sponsoring children in need is breaking the cycle of poverty

Compassion International exists as a Christian child advocacy ministry that releases children from spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty and enables them to become responsible, fulfilled Christian adults.

Founded by the Rev. Everett Swanson in 1952, Compassion began providing Korean War orphans with food, shelter, education and health care, as well as Christian training.

Today, Compassion helps more than 1.2 million children in 26 countries.

A friend emailed this article to me, and I thought I’d share it. There’s a lot of research

out there about music and how it can be very beneficial to children and adults in various

ways. Once in a while, this subject is covered by mainstream American media. Most of the

time, you have to dig into scholarly journals and papers or other non-academic sources to

find out what people are researching and their results.

Of course, I am a huge fan of music, esp. when it’s created, played, recorded, shared,

taught, and learned for positive purposes. Music and the sharing of music has a great deal of

depth and potential. Exploring that potential is very rewarding to me… and countless

others. I hope exploring and enjoying music is rewarding for you, as well!

My personal belief is that music is a beautiful gift and blessing from God. I do my best to honor

that gift. My intent is to do God’s will with music, and observe and experience how He works

through the medium of music, the universal language, to bless all He wills to bless. For me,

praising and worshipping God, the Holy Trinity, is primary. In other blogs, I’ll write about Biblical

references to music, and also present day Christian musicians and how God is working through

them.

Meanwhile, hope you enjoy this article!
